The New York Times and Wall Street Journal are teaming up to fight Facebook and Google in advertising, reports today's Times. They are doing so to gain better leverage when advertising via the "duopoly."

What if I told you that Ohio was the world's largest producer of glass tableware? Well, that was the case in the 1960's. Anchor Hocking, located in Lancaster, Ohio, employed 5,000 craftspeople that sold glasses across the nation and world. Due to business and government changes, the town is now a ghost of itself. I highly recommend reading this WSJ book review that sums up history for many small American cities from 1960 to 2010.

Imagine there was a retailer that specializes in gifts and it didn't offer gift wrapping? That would sound crazy, right? Well, that's the $40m, Wall Street-backed startup Zola. It does not offer gift wrapping on purchases for brides.
In contrast, most indie stores offer FREE gift wrapping on gifts.

Main Street vs. Wall Street How a 4-person web design firm united 200 indie stores against a $40m competitor
What if someone said that they're spending $40 million to beat up your small business? That's what new online gift registry retailer Zola plans to do. (Please see attached NY Times picture.) Gift registries are the last refuge of small, Main Street businesses and Zola has borrowed (in the banking world they call it "raised") $40m to swipe this registry business. Zola is backed by the same ...

How does a Main Street store open an online gift registry service?
I thought of this question after reading about a similar project in this week's Wall Street Journal. The writer Joanna Stern asked how someone can setup a new, informational website quickly. (Please find the WSJ article here.)
The writer picked Squarespace as her favorite. If I could, I'd like to ask the writer Ms. Stern to do the same test amongst online bridal registry store providers.
In under 30 minutes, a retailer can open ...

"Even the selection at a classic big-box retailer with hundreds of thousands of items doesnβt seem that wide anymore, compared to the Web," reports Niraj Shah in the Wall Street Journal.
"Shoppers now take for granted the concept of access to a deep range of goods... Itβs hard to win these days without offering a wide variety."
